Coaching

Healthcare is a tremendously challenging system in which to work and moves at such a fast pace that it is difficult to fully develop the interpersonal skills, business skills, clinical skills, and leadership skills required for success. This is where developmental coaching is truly effective for individuals and groups. The focus is on achieving outcomes through accelerated development that includes the whole person, the nervous system, and all aspects of their life. By meeting the person where they are now and partnering together with a strong commitment, I help leaders reframe their challenges in a developmental context that allows for a new way of seeing, being, and doing.

We tend to think of leaders as those in positions with responsibility over programs or individuals. In reality we are all leaders - and we must first be effectual personal leaders before we can lead others with our fullest potential. While every leader can and should benefit from professional coaching at one or more points in their career, physician coaching is nuanced. It takes a uniquely experienced coach to bring out the best of a physician and help them to become leader they want and need to be. With my lifetime of experience, I have a vast working knowledge of the world of the clinician, the patient, and the spectrum of the healthcare system - including operations, strategy, and regulatory aspects. I “speak the same language” and actually offer perspectives from multiple aspects which allows for deeper partnering, insight, and accelerated development.

What can coaching do for you?

  • Having an impactful leadership presence and skills

  • Utilizing insight and awareness of self and others

  • Being balanced and intentional with communications and actions

  • Creating generative growth - helping individuals build their own toolset for continued self-directed growth and development

Conscious & Mindful Leadership Development

I work with healthcare organizations to develop the skills of conscious & mindful leadership teams that can fit and function within the existing leadership framework. These skills used to be referred to as “soft skills” but are not at all soft - it is tremendously hard work to become a good leader! Conscious businesses invest in developing these skills in their leaders which allows for connection of purpose, values, mission, and action in aligned ways and that lead to truly effective organizations.

  • A conscious business is an organization that purposely balances a positive impact for all stakeholders involved. By pivoting from a "me" to a "we" mindset, conscious businesses prioritize a collective good, where all stakeholders benefit. In healthcare this is similar to the Triple/Quadruple Aim concepts when all components are balanced. A business doesn’t just make the decision to be “conscious”, it happens through intentionally developing that culture of balance from the top down!

  • In brief, a conscious leader embodies the “we” mindset. They are characterized by the ability to see, allow, and work with multiple perspectives on any issue. Self-awareness, curiosity, emotional intelligence, and being fully present in interactions allow for relationships to be authentic, resonant and trustful. These leaders are engaged in whole person learning with a stable, resilient inner state regardless of chaos. The conscious leader also stimulates their followers with a climate of learning, curiosity and discovery!

  • Turnover. Patient engagement. Rising healthcare costs. Burnout. Productivity. Outcomes. Wellbeing. Attrition. Employee engagement. Provider engagement. Financial stability and sustainability. And so much more!

No one is born a leader and it takes deep, intentional work to become a great leader. The leadership culture ultimately determines the bottom line. Organizations cannot afford to stay on the treadmill of continual turnover with the subsequent loss of skills, organizational knowledge & wisdom, and the resulting disengagement of staff. And it starts with the leadership team. The research has repeatedly supported the axiom of “employees leave their managers” and that means developing and keeping the best leaders is foundational to addressing so many of the struggles healthcare organizations face everyday.

Wellbeing & Resilience

Communities

Liminalities offers professionally facilitated, cohort based community groups for healthcare professionals within a private online platform. There is an ongoing epidemic of loneliness and disconnection within our society and the healthcare community is no exception. As practice sites have become increasingly decentralized from hospital settings and have become more sub-specialized, physicians and team members are struggling with a loss of community.

Liminalities communities offer a modern, online media solution via a curated structure with a core of mindfulness, check-ins, shared experiences, opportunities for learning, and organized activities (e.g. topic based discussions groups, hikes, social activities, etc). Providing a safe and monitored space for your employees to connect is a huge step towards rebuilding wellbeing, resilience, a sense of community, and organizational engagement.

Wellbeing Retreats

I work with your organization to plan and facilitate partial-day to multi-day retreats for healthcare professionals designed to:

  • Develop practices that build their inner resilience

  • Infuse creative exploration, play, and fun

  • Connect with others, nature, and self

  • And much more depending on length, theme, etc.

“Blair totally changed the way I approach a problem.

She helped me develop the skills I needed to think critically and constructively, which allowed me to become a better leader.”

— NARAYAN G. KULKARNI, D.O.

Why work with me?

Because I’ve been there. And done that.

I coach others because I know how to help. I have been in more liminal spaces than I can count and have done the work to develop, grow, and completely transform. As a coach, I bring all of my professional and life experiences to the table along with compassion, equanimity, and complete presence to the relationship. I hold space and become the mirror for the client, allowing them to experience new perspectives - thus opening the door for changes and growth to the next levels of their unique genius!

With three degrees in physical therapy culminating with a doctorate, I served 30+ years within multiple healthcare systems. I have worked extensively within the worlds of the clinician, the operations leader, the C-Suite executive, and the physician practice settings. All of these experiences give me a unique and solid understanding of the challenges healthcare leaders and physicians face everyday.

My recent years were spent focusing in areas of physician governance structures, medical director leadership development, coaching, and conscious leadership training. In 2022, I was ready for a new challenge and founded Liminalities to dedicate myself to helping others navigate transformation and change. Liminalities is named for “liminal spaces" - those uncomfortable spaces where we find ourselves in need of or in the midst of transformation.

While my professional healthcare experience is extremely diverse and relevant, equally important is my life experience and my “human development.” I have learned to lead myself first - as every good leader must understand their own history and inner landscape. It is imperative for leaders to be able to separate from their “self” to be able to serve others and I lead by example. This guided inner work allows leaders to develop authentic relationships, be present in all situations, be aware of others' inner landscapes, and ultimately help others grow as well.

In addition to my formal training as a coach, I continually work to advance my knowledge and skills in the many areas that allow me to fully support my clients. These areas include the neuroscience of adult learning and development, mindfulness, trauma, resilience, and many more. With Liminalities I bring together this training with my own life experiences to help individuals and companies. I look forward to working together to help you, your leaders, and your organization navigate transformation.
